Air Filter Changing Frequency

“How often should I change my air filter?” is the most common question we are asked. The simple answer: as often as it gets dirty. Here is how to know.

Every home or business is different, and so is the climate we use them in. Each has different occupants and is used differently. A family of four with a dog and a cat should change filters more often than a single occupant — more people means more dust and pollutants, and pets can multiply that several times over. A busy office with clients coming in and out all day will also need more frequent changes.

Signs it is time to change your filter

  • The air filter is damp or wet
  • The filter has been pulled into the unit by the airflow
  • You hold it up to a light and little or no light is visible through it
  • The amount of air coming out of your registers and grilles has dropped significantly
  • There is a build-up of dust on your registers or grilles (air has started to bypass the filter)

Our best advice is to check it once a month when you pay your power bill, since your air filter has a direct impact on the performance of your heating and cooling system. If it is dirty, change it. If not, check again in a week or two. Soon you will get a feel for how often the filter in your own home should be changed.
