Air Filters – the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly

Air filters keep the air coming into your house clean and help improve your unit's energy efficiency. When the filter is not changed regularly, a lot of costly issues can arise.

Your air conditioning unit cycles to maintain the temperature in your house. With a dirty or clogged filter, the unit can short-cycle, wasting energy and causing unnecessary temperature changes that leave you uncomfortable.

A clean air filter lets air flow freely, while a dirty one restricts airflow and causes build-up inside the unit, lowering the internal temperature. Given enough time, cold air can cause ice to form on the coils, resulting in the unit not working properly — or at all. Even without freezing, restricted airflow is hard on your unit and can cause uneven cooling and a lower level of comfort at a higher cost.

Allergen build-up is another major reason to change your filter regularly. With a dirty filter and a forced-air system running, allergens get released into the air you breathe.

A good filter stops dust, dirt, and allergens from building up on the unit's internal components. A bad filter causes additional wear and tear that can lead to costly repairs. Your unit will last longer when you take proper care of it — using the proper filter and changing it regularly.
